Why Storytelling is the Secret Ingredient in Every Great Video Project

In video production, story isn’t just part of the process — it is the process.
At Havashot Media, every project begins with one question: what’s the real message here? Whether you’re a business owner, a community organization, or a creative artist, the goal is always the same — to capture the essence of your message and make people feel something real.
Understanding What Clients Actually Need
When clients first come to me, they often say they want to “capture their message.” But not everyone understands what that truly means. For people-focused projects, it’s about drawing out emotion, personality, and honesty — and for event coverage, it’s about crafting a journey that lets viewers feel what it was like to be there. My goal is simple: to make people who missed it think, I won’t miss out next time.
The BestChance Project — Finding Emotion in Authenticity
Recently, I worked with BestChance, a charity that supports neurodivergent children in education. Their CEO had prepared lines for a scripted piece to camera — but even they felt the delivery felt too polished, too rehearsed. So I switched gears. I asked him a question that invited him to speak directly to me, not the camera. What followed was an incredibly raw, emotional moment that, truthfully, nearly brought him to tears. That’s what storytelling does — it transforms a message into something people can feel.

Digging Deeper Than the Brief
Before I ever hit record, I dig into what drives a client’s business or organization. What are they trying to achieve? Do they want to build awareness, inspire trust, or attract new business? Understanding their business model, goals, and audience helps me build something that’s not just beautiful — but effective. I’m not just a cinematographer. I’m also thinking like a marketer, strategist, and business partner. Every shot should support a tangible outcome.
The Common Mistake: Neglecting Storytelling
Too many businesses treat video like a visual fireworks show — overloaded with transitions, flashy text, and effects. Those can be fun, but if you can’t keep someone’s attention without them, then you’ve lost sight of the story. A good video draws people in because it connects, not because it distracts.
What Makes a Havashot Story Different
The difference between what I do and what others might deliver comes down to emotion. If I haven’t made you feel something — happiness, sadness, nostalgia, excitement — then I haven’t done my job. One of my proudest moments was when a client told me they cried watching a video I made about children with lower-limb disabilities. It showed the process of crafting custom braces and the lives they changed. That’s the heart of it. Real people, real emotion, real connection.

Knowing When a Story Lands
I know a story has landed when I don’t have to ask the client what they think — they tell me before I can even ask. When they can’t contain their excitement, when they say, “That’s exactly what we wanted,” that’s when I know I’ve done my job.
Every frame, every question, every cut — it all leads back to the same goal: telling stories that make people feel something. That’s what Havashot Media stands for.
